Jeddah

As we have heard, so

have we seen in the city

of the Lord of hosts, in

the city of our God,

which God will establish

forever. Selah

Psalm 48:8 ESV

Viewpoint: Jeddah, Saudia Arabia’s 2nd largest city, is known as the “Gateway to Mecca” because it’s the port of entry for most Hajj pilgrims. Ironically, it is also known as KSA’s most “open” city, with many residents adopting a more relaxed stance toward cultural and religious traditions. Jeddah’s current population is over 50% expatriate, compared to about 25% for the rest of the country. This diversity has led to greater openness to different traditions and ways of life compared to other parts of Saudi Arabia. For example, Jeddah has become a hub for Saudi Arabia’s emerging art and music scene.

As a beach city, Jeddah also opens its doors to tourists from inside and outside of KSA. Many think of Saudi Arabia as a land of barren deserts. Yet beneath the waters off of KSA’s Red Sea coast lie gardens of coral teeming with colorful sea life. Jeddah’s diving industry has expanded in recent years, enabling more people to explore these hidden wonders through snorkeling and scuba diving.

Prayer points:

  • Many expats live and work in KSA. Believers are sharing with Saudis in Jeddah. Pray that as they are sharing, they will find persons of peace who will open their homes and communities to hear Truth.
  • Pray that the Gospel message will be shared in a clear and understandable way so that Saudis will receive it as Good News.
  • For most Saudis, hearing the Gospel message just once isn’t enough. They must have repeated encounters with Christ-followers over a long period of time before they come to faith.  For this reason, pray that God will give more believers the courage and wisdom to share with those around them in Jeddah.
