Abha and Khamis Mushait
“But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” – Jeremiah 29:7 ESV
Viewpoint: Khamis Mushait and Abha are “sister cities” in the mountainous Asir region of southwestern Saudi Arabia.
Abha is the capital of Asir province; the mild climate there, mountain scenery, traditional souqs (markets), and historical sites make it a popular destination for Saudi tourists. Because of Abha’s cultural heritage, there are many historic places to visit, such as forts.
Khamis Mushait, named for the Mushait tribal clan of the Arabs, is best known for its military bases to its south, which have expanded the city’s population and economy since the 1970s. Another aspect of the economy is agriculture. Wheat, rice, coffee, and henna are grown.
Both Abha and Khamis Mushait are relatively conservative compared to other Saudi cities, and Saudis living there have few opportunities to interact with Christ-followers.
Prayer points:
- Pray that the Lord will send many expatriate believers to live and work in Abha/Khamis Mushait.
- Ask that He will open doors for them to build relationships and share the Gospel with Saudi people there.
- Ask that the area’s natural beauty will remind Saudis of God’s creative power and goodness and that they will hunger after His presence.
- Pray that God will send dreams and visions of Jesus to call the people of Abha/Khamis Mushait to the one true Father, that he will convince them of their need for a Savior, and that many will find life in Jesus.
